Welcome Tauber Business Co-director Ahn!

Ann Arbor, MI - The Tauber Institute for Global Operations is pleased to announce Michigan Ross Technology and Operations Professor Hyun-Soo Ahn has joined Tauber Institute leadership as Business School Co-Director. Honored with multiple teaching awards and research awards, including the Ross Researcher of the Year, Professor Ahn has advised students on dozens of Tauber Institute team projects. His research focuses on developing mathematical and data-science models related to supply chain management, dynamic pricing and revenue management, workforce agility, and resource allocation.

Tauber Institute's previous Business School Co-director, Damian Beil, is transitioning to a new role as Faculty Area Chair of Technology and Operations at Michigan Ross. In a letter to Tauber Institute alumni, Professor Beil writes, "I am passing the Tauber Institute Business School Co-Director baton to my colleague Hyun-Soo Ahn. Many of you already know Hyun-Soo through his exceptional scholarship, inspiring teaching, and his expert advising of Tauber team projects over the past two decades. Please join me in welcoming Hyun-Soo to his new role in the Tauber leadership team!"

"I graduated from the IOE department at U-M. So coming back was like coming home."

In 2001, Hyun-Soo Ahn earned his Ph.D. in Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan before heading off to teach industrial engineering and operations research at the University of California, Berkeley. Two years later he returned to Ann Arbor to join the Ross School of Business faculty as Assistant Professor of Operations and Management Science, and in 2009 he was named Associate Professor.  Dr. Ahn is currently the Donald C. Cook Professor of Business Administration and a professor of Technology and Operations

In addition to research areas previously mentioned, Dr. Ahn is also interested in modeling the customer's and firm's behavior and how it affects the firm's profit in revenue management and supply chains. He has worked with more than 30 companies and his research has been funded by several organizations, including the National Science Foundation. His papers appear in leading journals in the field, including Operations Research, Management Science, M&SOM, and Journal of Applied Probability.

"The greatest joy in being a Michigan faculty is watching my students succeeding in academia and corporations."

But Professor Ahn's primary focus is his students. He considers a highlight of his career to be his Ph.D. and MBA student placements. At Michigan Ross, he teaches supply chain analytics, business statistics, and consulting methodology to MBAs, Executive MBAs, MSCM and BBA students. He has won six teaching awards voted on by students, including the 2014 Exec MBA teaching excellence award, 2017 Global MBA teaching excellence award, and 2006 BBA teaching excellence award.

When asked what students and other faculty would be surprised to learn about him, Dr. Ahn replied, "Many students know me too well to keep a surprise. But, if I have to pick, it might be that I was ranked #1 in one category at Mixcloud.com."  Next time you need some great beats to accompany your day, just check out his music.
