Tauber Institute kicks off 2022 team projects

Ann Arbor, MI - Tauber Institute students spend the summer diving deep into operations problem solving, uncovering millions of dollars of savings for their corporate sponsors – and championing improvements in areas such as energy consumption, waste reduction, throughput time, and supply chain risk.

This year, the University of Michigan’s Tauber Institute for Global Operations launched a total of 21 business and engineering graduate student teams to devise operations solutions for 16 top global firms.

Students and their faculty advisors kick off the 2022 team projects on April 1 with a discussion of the unique challenges and opportunities each project presents. The student teams work on solutions for their sponsoring companies from May through mid-August, then share their results at the annual Spotlight! Team Project Showcase and Scholarship Competition. Solutions may include lean process design and implementation, manufacturing site strategic assessment, sourcing plans, inventory management, logistics, and new product development.

Tauber’s 2022 team project sponsors are leaders in a wide range of industries, including aerospace, health care, internet commerce, high tech, manufacturing, automotive, retail, and food and beverage. The institute is pleased to partner this summer with American Industrial Partners Canam and Energy, Amazon, The Boeing Company, BrandSafway, Brunswick Corporation, Dell, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Gopuff, Microsoft Corporation, MillerKnoll, National Center for Manufacturing Sciences, Pfizer Inc., Stanley Black & Decker, Stoneridge, and Target.

A signature initiative of the Tauber Institute, team projects pair exceptional students with top companies for a 14-week multidisciplinary, collaborative project with the potential for significant impact. Each 2-3 person project team is comprised of graduate students in business and engineering. Along with executive direction from the sponsoring firm, each team receives support from both a Michigan Engineering and a Michigan Ross School of Business faculty advisor, and project oversight by a Tauber Institute Co-Director. The Tauber Alumni Network provides additional mentorship and networking opportunities for students at their team project locations.

The 2021 Tauber team projects resulted in a record-setting $989 million in savings according to sponsoring company calculations, an average of $43 million per project over three years.

Each year, Tauber student teams uncover significant savings for sponsoring companies – and champion major improvements in project fields such as data analytics, sustainability in operations, supply chain, and strategy.
