Ann Arbor, MI – Many professionals cite finding the right mentor as a key component to success in their careers. For the 2020 Tauber Team Projects, the Tauber Institute matched thirty institute students with alumni mentors selected specifically to complement their professional interests. The mentor pairs meet monthly from March through October, and may choose to continue their relationship throughout their careers.

“Each mentorship match is unique!” said Student Program Coordinator Chloe Jacob, “The program provides a meaningful opportunity for students to connect and engage with Tauber alumni who have careers and goals that align with their own. The Tauber alumni are able to provide guidance on anything from corporate culture to influencing key decision-makers.”

Early in 2020, Tauber students and potential mentors completed surveys to provide data for optimal matching. “We updated the program this year to make it more beneficial for both our students and our alumni,” said Tauber Institute Associate Director Asli Aka. “We are thrilled about our alumni's continuous involvement and willingness to share their knowledge and experience with our student community.”

The mentorship program coincides with the Tauber Institute’s team projects, when students work for up to 14-weeks to solve tough operations problems at a wide range of top global firms. Tauber student Anubhav Gupta (MSE-IOE ’20), who is working for Pfizer during the summer, found his relationship with his mentor has been enhanced by their shared experience with the Tauber program. “My mentor has been exceptionally encouraging and supportive in providing me with higher level career and Tauber project perspectives,” Gupta said. “It's refreshing to talk with someone who has experienced the challenges associated with a Tauber project and the journey of building a career afterwards."

The Tauber Institute for Global Operations is a joint venture between the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business and Michigan Engineering, working together with industry partners to facilitate cross-disciplinary education in global operations management. The Tauber Institute is an inaugural recipient of the UPS George D. Smith Prize for effective and innovative preparation of students to be good practitioners of operations research, management science, or analytics.
