Alumni Profile: Anuj Gupta

MBA ME 2003

Anuj Gupta, ME ’03, started his professional career in 2000 in Mumbai, India, where he managed a dozen people at a specialty chemical plant. Today, he is Global Manager of Brewery Operations and Strategic Planning for Anheuser Busch Inbev in New York City where his responsibilities include overseeing $10B in variable manufacturing costs across four continents.

Gupta came to the University of Michigan in 2002 to pursue his Master of Engineering, Manufacturing and Operations Management degree and to participate in the Tauber Institute for Global Operations program. He was awarded the TMI Merit Scholarship in 2003.

Gupta credits his Tauber experience for setting him on a path that opened doors with strategy consulting firm McKinsey & Company in 2004 where for five years he led strategic and operations projects for global clients in industrials, banking and IT Services. “My Tauber experience was critical for my big break at McKinsey & Company,” he said.

Following his stint with McKinsey, he spent two years with Alcoa Inc. as Director/Program Manager of Corporate Strategy before landing his current position with the world’s best known brewer.

Because the Tauber scholarship allowed him to pursue his dream career, Gupta feels strongly about supporting his alma mater, and as such has signed on as co-chair of the Tauber Scholarship Committee (along with Geoffrey Phillips, another former Tauber scholarship recipient).

“I am very happy to be able to give back to Tauber and in a way that will help others,” he said. Gupta indicated that the lean manufacturing skills he learned coupled with the culture of leadership at Tauber have been very helpful to him throughout the years.

Tauber’s far-reaching network of alumni stretches across all geographic and professional realms, and continues to be an important resource for leading companies. “Overall I think there is a lot of opportunity for Tauber to not just be technically relevant but also to stay on the radar of large corporations,” he said.

He offers a piece of advice to current Tauber students. “Keep up on the latest trends in operations. Companies nowadays are very demanding. Even large consulting companies struggle to keep pace with companies like Alcoa and AB Inbev which are way ahead in terms of problems they face and the kind of solutions they need,” said Gupta. “The world is a different place and problems are more complex than ever.”

Gupta lives in New Jersey with his wife and two-year-old son.
